Which repair it needs

• Light scuffs in the clear coat can often be polished out.
• Scratches through the paint to the primer or metal need the area repaired and refinished, so it doesn't rust or peel later.
• Dents with the paint intact sometimes don't need repainting at all; dents with cracked paint or on a body line need panel repair and paint.

Insurance or not?

For small damage, many people pay themselves rather than file a claim. Compare the estimate with your deductible first. If someone else damaged the car, their insurance may pay.
